A welcome from Jan

Welcome to Positively Stone Aged

I’m Jan Gosling, and I carve Oamaru limestone into sculptures inspired by the world around me — a fern beginning to unfold, the movement of water, or a seed stirring into life.

Some pieces are small and delicate; others have a presence that fills a garden. In each, I explore how a curve, an opening and the changing light can bring pale stone to life.

I hope these photographs give you a little of the pleasure I find in carving. Thank you for taking the time to explore my work.

White stone. Deep shadows.

Oamaru stone. Every piece is different.

Pale limestone, soft curves and the dark spaces between them. Jan’s work draws attention to what is carved away as much as what remains.

The stone can reveal fossils and warm iron-oxide veins as it is cut. Those variations become part of the individual piece.

Jan began carving Oamaru stone in 2000, drawing on the woodcarving skills her father had taught her. Ferns, seashells, flowing water and the human figure run through the work.

Her interest is in soft, flowing forms and a surface that can be appreciated through touch as well as sight.
