detail "changing face"1256 viewsCulture changes and evolves as it comes in contact with new ideas and other people.
Dad taught me to carve in a Maori style, and every now and then I revisit that.
In this piece I combine the traditional method of carving - with traditional shapes cut out of paua and inserted in the stone in a non-traditional way.
It pays homage to the past, and looks forward to the future – where the shape of things can still pay homage to what has come before, but isn’t afraid to adapt to new ideas.

Great Expectations (II)1256 viewsI was asked to carve a bigger version of this statue to go outside of the new birthing Unit in Hastings. So instead of 60cm tall, this lady stands 1.3m. So she is taller and a bit further along in her pregnancy. I hope the people going in to the hospital enjoy her.
